Celebrating English Tourism Week 2017

Running from 25th March to 2nd April 2017, English Tourism Week celebrates England’s visitor experiences and world renowned tourist attractions.

His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is Patron of English Tourism Week and during the week a wide variety of local and national events will take place to celebrate English tourism, including museum events, guided tours, exhibitions, sports experiences and lots more.

The English tourism sector touches everyone – visitors, residents, businesses and employees – and is one of the few sectors active in every part of the country. It is the third largest employer, supporting 2.6 million jobs every day, and is a major employer of school leavers and young people and an incubator for entrepreneurs.

The visitor economy is worth £106bn a year to England, supporting thousands of businesses and impacting on the performance of supplier industries including farming, transport, retailing, sport, museums and galleries, the theatre and other performing arts.

Activities taking place during English Tourism Week this year include:

  • Exhibition at St Paul’s Cathedral to mark the 350th anniversary of the Great Fire of London
  • Alice in Wonderland inspired Mad Hatter’s tea party in East Sussex
  • Shakespeare Walks in London
  • Follow in the footsteps of painter John Constable on a guided tour of Wiltshire
  • Henry Moore sculpture exhibition in Surrey
  • Explore the Georgian world of Jane Austen in Bath.

The week concludes with a now traditional ‘Tweetathon’ on 1st and 2nd April and businesses, visitors and locals are being encouraged to post their #ETW17 images on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

“English Tourism Week is now a firm fixture in the calendar for all of us involved in the travel and tourism industry in England,” said Janet Redler, Chief Executive of Janet Redler Travel & Tourism. “We would urge visitors and local people alike to make the most of the wonderful programme of events and to support at least one of the activities on offer. We look forward to hearing about everyone’s experiences on social media.”
