Mary Whayman is the newest member of our team and, in our latest blog, we’d like you to meet her!

Mary has worked as a Travel Advisor at Janet Redler Travel for just over a year and her role involves co-ordinating bookings, helping to organise tours and liaising with clients in-country. Having worked in hospitality most of her life, the move into travel seemed like a natural progression.

Being part of a small team is one of the most rewarding parts of the job, explains Mary. “We are all trying to deliver the best customer experience and every trip is different. I particularly enjoy getting to know more about all the amazing places in the UK, Ireland and further afield that our clients choose to visit.”

When it comes to recommending places for clients, Mary says she was brought up in London and still loves the city. “There is so much history and culture and an amazingly diverse food offering. One of my favourite places is the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square.

“Oxford is a magical city too with its ‘dreaming spires’. The university buildings and museums are out of this world and you can enjoy a meal in The Turf Tavern, a pub dating back to 1381. You can also indulge in a spot of punting on the River Thames – an unforgettable thing to do.”

Mary’s family is from Ireland, so she knows from personal experience that it is one of the most welcoming countries in the world, with lots of stunning countryside to explore. “I love Cork with its beautiful beaches, and castles such as Blarney Castle. Kerry and Killarney offer beautiful views and great nightlife. The ‘craic’ is always alive!”

Mary is a fan of Game of Thrones which was filmed in Northern Ireland

One of the most memorable tours Mary has helped to organise so far was for a 50th wedding anniversary. “It was lovely to see three generations coming together for such a special occasion.”

Mary moved to Shrewsbury a couple of years ago with her husband and son, who is a trainee chef. Her daughter is about to graduate drama school and hopes to pursue a career on the stage.

When she isn’t in the office, Mary loves to get out walking with her dog Molly, exploring the beautiful Shropshire countryside. “I also enjoy going to the theatre – both regional and West End – and I have been lucky enough to see a show or two on Broadway!”

Mary has a real passion for travel and has visited 31 countries so far, with Japan and Memphis high on her travel bucket list.

Of course, when it comes to visiting the UK and Ireland for the first time, Mary advises visitors not to try to do too much. “Take the time to enjoy it, and to take in where you are without rushing.” And if there’s one thing you must do, it’s to visit a local pub. In Mary’s words, they are “a truly unique part of British and Irish culture".
