A stage of the world-renowned Tour de France cycling event will take place in Wales for the first time in 2027, marking an historic moment for the country. This landmark event is set to inspire cyclists and visitors from across the globe to discover Wales and include it in their future adventures.

UK Sport is proud to support the hosting of the 2027 Tour de France Grand Départ, which will showcase the best of Scotland, England and Wales, with millions of spectators lining the streets creating an atmosphere unlike no other.
This will be the largest free-to-spectate sporting event ever staged in the UK, beginning in Edinburgh in Scotland, travelling through the north west of England and finishing in Wales, as the race makes its way from Welshpool to Caerdydd (Cardiff).

Stage 1 begins in Edinburgh on 2 July 2027 and passes through the beautiful border country before finishing in Carlisle in England, 184 km (114 miles) away. Stage 2 begins in Keswick, in England’s spectacular Lake District, on 3 July, arriving in the fantastic city of Liverpool, 223 km (139 miles) away. The third and final stage on Sunday 4 July begins in mid-Wales and travels south through epic Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park and the south Wales valleys, culminating in a showpiece finish in the lively Welsh capital.

Wales offers some of the most spectacular and varied landscapes in the UK for cycling, from challenging climbs with switchbacks that will test the best, to family-friendly, traffic free trails and long-distance routes for those looking for a real endurance challenge.
To coincide with the route reveal, Geraint Thomas OBE, two-time Olympic Champion and winner of the 2018 Tour de France, has been named Wales’ Cycling Ambassador.

With over 1,200 miles of National Cycle Network routes, world-renowned mountain-bike parks, and outstanding gravel and road cycling, Wales is the perfect destination for cyclists, whatever their ability. From iconic climbs such as the Bwlch-y-Groes mountain pass to family-friendly trails such as the Mawddach Trail and Elan Trail, the country combines varied terrain, dramatic scenery and warm Welsh hospitality.
