2017: a year of legends, history, heritage and archaeology...

2017 sees Wales celebrating its Year of Legends and Scotland celebrating its Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology, providing tourists with the perfect opportunity to uncover the past of these two beautiful countries.

The Year of Legends 2017 will explore Wales’s distinctive history, culture, heritage and mythology, while the Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology 2017 will showcase Scotland’s past, from earliest times.

In 2017, tourism providers across Wales will be using Wales’s legends as inspiration to create and theme products and experiences, ranging from historic heroes and sporting greats to the country’s iconic heritage sites and legendary tales.

Ken Skates, Economy Secretary in the Welsh Government, said: “The Year of Legends 2017 presents an opportunity to build on the truly distinctive identity Wales has on the world stage, by allowing us to capitalise on Wales’s rich culture and heritage to stand apart from our competitors.

“In doing so, we want to reinforce positive perceptions of our country, and position Wales as a high-quality, relevant and contemporary 21st century destination. The Year of Legends is our chance to immerse people in our epic story and an opportunity to create legendary experiences for everyone.”

Visitors to Wales can, for example, relive the glory of legendary Welsh ruler Owain Glyndwr at Harlech Castle; look for the Lady of the Lake in Llyn y Fan Fach, a spectacular lake in the Black Mountains of south east Wales, or discover the grave (below) of the famous hound of Llywelyn the Great in Beddgelert, a picturesque village in Snowdonia.

Scotland also has a wealth of riches in history and archaeology: from World Heritage Sites to ancient monuments; listed buildings to historic battlefields; cultural traditions to myths, stories and legends. The Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology 2017 will shine a spotlight on some of the country’s greatest assets and icons, as well as its hidden gems.

Visitors to Scotland can take in the birthplaces of famous Scots such as Robbie Burns, for example; follow in the footsteps of historical figures such as Bonnie Prince Charlie and Mary Queen of Scots; discover ancient sites such as Skara Brae, which is thought to date from 3200 BC, or retrace family roots and links to Scottish clans.

“Focusing on history in Scotland and legends in Wales will surely increase awareness of, and interest in, these two countries,” says Janet Redler, Chief Executive of Janet Redler Travel and Tourism. “Around the world, people are fascinated by the heritage of the British Isles, and many of us have family roots in Wales and Scotland. With the addition of very favourable exchange rates at the moment, there has never been a better time to visit these countries.”
