Often described as the most beautiful carnival in the world, Venice Carnival is an annual festival which ends on Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) and is famous for the elaborate masks worn by revellers.

Although the carnival dates back to the 12th Century, it was only re-established in its modern form in 1979, and has since become one of Europe's most spectacular and popular festivals, with over 3 million people visiting each year.

Venice, with its romantic background of canals and bridges, provides the perfect setting for two weeks of parties, balls and celebrations, as well as the famous 'most beautiful mask' contest.
